Welcome to our research laboratory where students, faculty and members of the community develop simple, economic processes to convert plastic "waste" into materials and products.
Recycled Materials Laboratory Overview
The Plastics Recycling Research Laboratory was founded in 1993 to study the design, processing and performance of reclaimed plastics and to share these findings with our local community. Projects undertaken in the laboratory in past years included the reprocessing of EPS foam into computer packaging, the recycling of PET soda bottles into construction industry parts and the recycling of polyethylene milk bottles into material for detergent bottles. Grants for these projects have been received from agencies as diverse as the City of San Jose, the California Department of Conservation and Clorox Corporation.
The knowledge gained in these studies is presented to the community in workshops at the University, as well as publications and presentation to community groups. The laboratory is also used as a learning center for our students in mechanical engineering, chemistry and environmental studies.
